History of the White Hart Inn
The White Hart is one of only three licensed premises in St. Ives, which stands on the same spot as when first recorded by Edmund Pettis (A Local Tradesman) in 1728. However, it is one of only two licensed premises in St. Ives which has traded in the same location with the same name since 1728.
The original pub/hostelry was destroyed (as was most of the then St. Ives) by the "Great Fire of St. Ives" in 1689, which actually started in the White Hart. The present building dates from the early 18th Century having been rebuilt after the Great Fire. It re-opened in 1703.
The 19th Century Census returns allows us to peer through the keyholes of the White Hart bedrooms and see who was staying here the night before market day. On Census night in 1861, the pub had 13 lodgers, 4 butchers, 4 dealers, 4 drovers and a soldier.
Part of the Stable Block behind the pub provides a glimpse, of what St. Ives used to look like, when all the big market hotels had stables. The White Hart was a "Coaching Inn" and the "Defiance Coach" left from here to go to Cambridge in the 1830's.
The Inn has also been accredited with a "5 Star Hygiene Rating" by Huntingdonshire District Council.
The White Hart maintains its traditional Innkeeping Heritage and is an accreditated member of The British Institute of Innkeeping.
